Indica
Indica strains originate from the Hindu Kush mountain ranges of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and India. They are characterized by their shorter, bushier plant structure and broad fan leaves. Historically cultivated for their dense, resinous buds and powerful physical effects.

Sativa
Sativa strains originate from equatorial regions including Colombia, Mexico, Thailand, and Southeast Asia. They produce tall, narrow plants with thin leaves and longer flowering cycles. Sativas are celebrated for their cerebral, uplifting effects and aromatic complexity.

Hybrid / Blend
Hybrid strains are cross-bred genetics combining Indica and Sativa lineages. They represent the majority of licensed cannabis products in Ontario's legal market. Modern hybrids are engineered for specific terpene profiles, THC potency, and balanced effect blends โ offering the best of both worlds.
Leans toward the relaxing, body-focused qualities of Indica but with a lighter mental uplift. Great for after-work relaxation without full sedation. Popular examples: Wedding Cake, Gelato, Runtz, Zkittlez, Sunset Sherbet.
Provides mental energy and creativity with a mild body relaxation. Perfect daytime-to-evening transitional option. Popular examples: Blue Dream, Pineapple Express, Strawberry Cough, Super Lemon Haze.
Balanced effects providing moderate mind and body experience. Versatile for any time of day. Popular examples: OG Kush, White Widow, Cherry Pie, GSC (Girl Scout Cookies), Do-Si-Dos.
Low THC with elevated CBD content (1:1 to 1:20 ratios). Minimal psychoactive effect with potential wellness benefits. Great for beginners or CBD-focused consumers. Examples: CBD Critical Mass, ACDC, Cannatonic.
Budtender Tip: In Ontario's legal market, most products are technically hybrids. The Indica/Sativa label is a general consumer guide โ always check the terpene profile for a more accurate picture of expected effects. Caryophyllene = more relaxing; Limonene = more uplifting.
Understanding Major Cannabis Terpenes
Terpenes are natural aromatic compounds produced in trichomes that give each cannabis cultivar its distinctive aroma, flavour, and sensory character. They work synergistically with cannabinoids in what scientists call the "entourage effect."
Myrcene
Earthy, musky, herbal aroma with deep clove and cardamom notes. Most common terpene in cannabis โ contributes to sedating, body-heavy effects.
Common in: IndicasLimonene
Crisp citrus, sweet lemon, and orange rind aroma. Uplifting and mood-elevating properties. Prominent in sativa-leaning strains.
Common in: SativasCaryophyllene
Peppery, warm spice aroma with woody undertones. The only terpene known to directly bind cannabinoid receptors. Anti-inflammatory properties.
Common in: Hybrids & IndicasTerpinolene
Complex bouquet of pine needle, sweet fruit, and fresh herbs. Slightly sedating in isolation but often found in energetic hazy sativas.
Common in: Hazy SativasLinalool
Soft lavender, floral, and spice aroma. Known for calming and anti-anxiety properties. Often found in relaxing indica-leaning genetics.
Common in: IndicasPinene
Fresh pine needle, rosemary, and evergreen aroma. May improve alertness and memory retention. Found across sativa and hybrid genetics.
Common in: Sativas & HybridsOcimene
Sweet, herbaceous, and tropical fruit aroma. Uplifting and potentially antiviral properties. Found in exotic tropical haze genetics.
Common in: TropicalsHumulene
Earthy, hoppy, and woody aroma (same terpene found in hops). Subtle appetite-suppressing properties, commonly found in OG lineage strains.
Common in: OG StrainsEdible Dosing: Start Low & Go Slow
Edibles are processed through the liver, creating a delayed onset (30โ90 minutes) and longer duration (4โ8 hours). Under Health Canada regulations, edibles are packaged with a maximum of 10mg THC per unit.
Ideal for new consumers or those with low tolerance. Subtle effects, easy to manage.
Most common recreational dose. Wait at least 90 minutes before considering more.
CBD moderates THC intensity. Great for those seeking wellness benefits with reduced psychoactive strength.
